With 60 years of experience and over 29.000 employees, NXP is constantly involved in a number of national and European research projects aiming at the further development of approaches in the field of embedded software-intensive systems as well as IT security. As coordinator of SunRISE, NXP, together with the other partners involved, will

  • Evaluate the use cases under technical feasibility aspects and will work on identification of resilience and security requirements.

  • Support defining the necessary requirements for resilience, trust and security for the SunRISE architecture, which combines methods of artificial intelligence (AI) both on edge nodes and in the cloud and manages secure communication via homomorphic encryption (HE).

  • Provide the use cases with the necessary hardware components, such as e.g. secure elements and crypto accelerators for AI & HE as FPGAs, which will later be integrated in the project demonstrators.

AnyWi Technologies

AnyWi is specialized in robust, reliable and secure communication between mobile units and fixed backends. The technologies involved focus on the use of redundant communication channels to enhance the overall reliability. AnyWi has contributed to several open source projects, most notably FreeBSD with contributions to the TCP/IP networking functionality. The company is based the Netherlands.

Cloud & Heat Technologies GmbH

Secure, green, and smart: since 2011, Cloud&Heat Technologies has been revolutionizing the global cloud and data center market with its integrated and sustainable technology. Born out of the idea to use waste heat from servers for heating, the Dresden-based company has developed into an end-to-end partner for energy-efficient, secure, and scalable public, private, and hybrid cloud solutions – and has positioned itself as a real alternative to the major US providers that currently dominate the cloud market. Today, Cloud&Heat operates data centers at over 24 locations worldwide, maintains international partnerships in Europe and Asia, and has also won an array of awards, including the German Data Center Prize (on no less than three occasions) and the 2019 Tech Tour Innovation Award.

Fraunhofer IIS, Division Engineering of Adaptive Systems

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS is one of Germany's most important industrial applied research facilities for the development of microelectronic systems. The scientists in the Division Engineering of Adaptive Systems EAS, located in Dresden, develop key technologies for the connected world of tomorrow.

Major aspects of their work are the design of reliable microchips and complex electronic systems in leading-edge semiconductor technologies as well as the corresponding design methods. Furthermore, they focus on the development of intelligent sensor systems, the analysis of large amounts of data as well as on new approaches for distributed control systems. Tailored to current industrial needs and future challenges, the researchers work on adaptive and robust technological solutions in a broad range of applications such as mobility and industrial automation.

Philips Healthcare, The Netherlands (Philips Medical Systems Nederland B.V.)

In the Netherlands Philips Healthcare focuses on diagnostic imaging sytems and image guided therapy systems. Both the X-Ray based Imaged Guided Therapy business line and Magnetic Resonance Imaging are headquartered in Best, where also R&D and production of these systems take place.

SandGrain

Sandgrain develops and provides a root of trust in (integrated circuit) hardware as a main and essential contribution to development of security in electronic networks, the internet of things in particular. Each of the devices in such network may be now provided with a root of trust in hardware.

Sirris

Sirris is a private collective research center founded in 1949 by Agoria, the multi-sector federation for the Belgian technology industry, with the mission to improve the competitiveness of its about 2500 member companies through technology and innovation. These companies range from small and medium-sized businesses to multinational companies (>95% SMEs), active in the sectors of Materials, Metal Products, Automobile, ICT & Mechatronics, and Industrial Automation. Two groups from its ICT & Mechatronics business unit participate in SunRISE. The Software Engineering group focuses on the capabilities needed by companies to develop and deliver software-intensive products to the market, including understanding various domains and interpreting them in terms of software requirements; its main expertise in SunRISE is related to security for cloud & IoT (security by design, security-aware design patterns, Blockchain). The EluciDATA Lab supports companies in realizing data-related product and service innovations by means of data science and AI; its main expertise in SunRISE is related to the usage of ML techniques for the detection of security-related anomalies and threats (such as device misconfigurations).

TU Delft

Technische Universiteit Delft (TUD) is a world-class university ranked 20th for engineering and technology in the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Established in 1842, it is the largest and oldest institute of technology in the Netherlands. TUD’s eight faculties are home to over 20,000 students and some 900 academic staff and cover the entire spectrum of technology, with a combined science, engineering and design focus. The Computer Engineering (CE) performs research in -and teaches - multidisciplinary engineering at the top level from device technology, hardware design, hardware security, test and reliability, software development to computing systems and the study and development of tools and software that allow to improve the analysis and synthesis of computing systems. The Circuit and Systems lab (CAS) conducts research on efficient digital hardware design for a broad range of computing use-cases with varying power-performance-cost targets. Outcomes of CAS’s activities typically include hardware prototypes, design and simulation frameworks, as well as virtual prototypes. ECTM investigates innovative devices, 3D device integration concepts and novel microstructures and materials, based on in-depth knowledge of device physics, silicon technology and material characterization, in a multi-disciplinary research environment, with a with a strong interaction with the industry. The labs have a long experience in leading and participating in various EU and national research projects, as well as collaborative research with the industry in this field including worldwide leading companies, such as IBM, ARM, Intel, Infineon, ST, Atmel, Renesas, IMEC, ABN AMRO, Port of Rotterdam, NXP, Bosch, Besi, Philips, Mapper, FEI, ASML, etc. Furthermore, several start-ups have been initiated by our members and by our alumni in the past 10 years.

Ulm University

Ulm University is a leading research university in the south of Germany.

Being ranked 8th worldwide in the 2017 THE young university ranking, it scores ahead of well-established technical universities like KIT.

With a carefully selected set of study programs and faculties from MINT and Medicine, it offers a unique set of highly relevant topics. The Institute of Distributed Systems at Ulm University has a strong expertise in the field of security and privacy in embedded systems. They work in bilateral projects with industry partners like Audi, Daimler, Siemens, or Denso and transfer expertise to industrial practice. This particularly includes investigations on privacy enhancing technologies based on advanced cryptographic mechanisms like attribute-based credentials, secure multi-party computation and homomorphic encryption.

Technolution

Technolution (Gouda, The Netherlands) is a Dutch technology integrator. We develop electronics, programmable logic, embedded hardware, embedded software and application software in technical domains such as Smart Mobility (e.g. adaptive traffic management, connected and automated driving, waterway management), Smart Energy (e.g. energy sensing, flexible use of energy, quality monitoring of infrastructure, smart homes), High-tech Industry (e.g. high-speed electronics, medical applications, electronic-optics) and Public Safety and Security (e.g. encrypted communication, high-assurance systems, cyber-security) and more. We work closely with our customers to create practical, applicable technological innovations that will produce real value for their business case. SunRISE is of strategic importance to stay ahead and enhance systems’ security.
